Grist Mills

E-mail
In the early 1900's, most rural communities had a grist mill where residents could take their grain to be ground into meal or flour.

At one time, Georgia had close to 1200 of the watered-powered wonders. Although they are no longer common, there are a few grist mills still operating that grind fresh corn and other grains and offer these products for sale to the public; some also offer custom grinding services. Call ahead to assure availability and hours of operation before making the trip to one of these facilities. The following are operational water-powered grist mills still in existence in Northeast Georgia:

Barker's Mill (Rabun Gap) ~ This working water powered grist mill was built by Mary Hambidge on her property in 1935.  It was designed for use by the farm and the neighbors for making corn meal as well as livestock feed. Woody Malot is the Miller and it is open 12 noon to 4 pm the first Saturday of every month.

Hurricane Shoals Mill (Jefferson)

Nora Mill (Helen)nora_mills

Sylvan Falls Mill (Rabun Gap)

Logan Turnpike Mill (Blairsville)

Ragsdale Mill (Homer)

Seagraves Mill (Ila) ~ Not open. It has been burned down a number of times and rebuilt, but does not have much of it's historic integrity intact.
